Function: A lot of what the upper extremities do functionally is accomplished by the WRISTS and HANDS. The wrist comprises the junction where the lower arm meets the hand and is made up of eight small bones known as the carpal bones. The lower row is proximal to the two forearm bones, known as the radius and ulna. The upper row connects with the metacarpals which are the bones the lie within the upper part of the palm of the hand. These bones, along with the intricate ligament, tendon, and muscular systems of the hands, allow for precise movements and fine motor skill performance, including grasping, pinching, and manipulating.
